Prevent Flat Head Syndrome

FAQ

Q. What is the Infant Sleep Mat?
A. Infant Sleep Mat is a mat designed by a board certified Pediatrician and aids in the prevention of Flat Head Syndrome by providing gentle, even support to your baby's head from all sides. This allows your baby to develop and retain a normal, well shaped head.

Q. What is "Flat Head Syndrome"?
A. Flat Head Syndrome (also known as Plagiocephaly) is a head deformity that occurs when a baby sleeps on a mattress with the head in one particular position. Because a baby's skull has not fully hardened until 9 months of age, continual pressure caused by sleeping on the back and a particular side of the head causes the skull to flatten on that side. If no corrective measures are taken, this can result in permanent skull and face deformities. Continual repositioning of your baby's head while sleeping can help lessen the risk of Flat Head Syndrome. Use of Infant Sleep Mat can minimize the risk of flat head syndrome in babies.

Q. If placing a baby to sleep on his or her back causes Flat Head Syndrome, why can't I put my baby to sleep on his or her stomach?
A. In 1992, The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that all newborn babies and infants be placed on their backs during sleep to avoid sudden infant death syndrome (also known as SIDS). Stomach sleeping is considered a major risk factor for SIDS, as it may hinder a baby's breathing. Unfortunately, the recommended practice of placing babies to sleep on the back has resulted in a significant increase in the head deformity known as Flat Head Syndrome.

Q. How does Infant Sleep Mat work to prevent Flat Head Syndrome?
A. With multiple layers of padding and a specially formulated gel in the head area of the Infant Sleep Mat, it is able to mold around your baby's head to provide gentle support to all sides of the head. This removes the pressure that may ordinarily cause your baby's skull to flatten and become deformed. It also removes the burden of continually repositioning your baby's head while sleeping.

Q. Where can I buy Infant Sleep Mat?
A. Infant Sleep Mat can be purchased here or by calling (877) 409-3780.

Q. Can Infant Sleep Mat correct Flat Head Syndrome if it has already occurred in my baby?
A. While we have experienced cases in which mild flattening of the skull has been corrected through the use of Infant Sleep Mat in infants under the age of 6 months, the mat is intended for the prevention of plagiocephaly.

Q. Is Infant Sleep Mat safe to use on newborns?
A. The Infant Sleep Mat is completely safe to use on newborns and infants up until the age of 5 months when used as directed. The padding and gel used in the mat are nontoxic and the soft, plush cover is easily removable and machine washable. Additionally, the side support bumpers help keep your baby safely positioned on the mat, while the stomach strap ensures your baby will stay comfortably on the mat.

Q. At what age should I discontinue my baby's use of Infant Sleep Mat?
A. Infant Sleep Mat is intended for newborn babies up until the age of 5 months. Do not use Infant Sleep Mat if your baby is able to roll over from his or her back.
